The 2013 Photochallenge theme for week 13 is Entropy. This is one of my favorite topics to shoot, especially this time of year. Early spring is not a good time to shoot outdoors. The vegetation is still dead. The snow is leaving, so the ground is covered with dead grass and mud. It’s unsightly, at best. So, what can you shoot? Rust!! All the rusty old antiques that are hidden in the summer when the grass grows up around them, and the leaves on the trees shield them. There are a number of these things hanging around, and right now is when you can see them the best. The brush that covered them up in the summer has been flattened by the snow over the winter. The leaves are off the trees and the bushes. And the dead ground makes a suitable back stop for rusty old trucks, tractors, wagons, and other treasures. These old trucks are sitting at a farm I drive by occasionally, and I just love the look of them. They have done some work, and have seen a few miles! Entropy is a process of degradation or running down or a trend to disorder. These trucks, and the rusty old treasures I like shooting this time of year are run down and degrading. But the ground, and the grass, and the trees that are currently dead are going to be reborn soon. The cycle is beginning again.
